ASNSW Introduction to Astronomy (I2A) course

The first ASNSW Introduction to Astronomy (I2A) course is being held at the Epping Creative Centre on Monday evenings over 8 weeks this summer. The course is suitable for newcomers to astronomy, or those seeking a deeper understanding of the science behind the observations. You don’t need to have any maths or science background!

Dates: 8 weekly sessions, Mondays 1 February to 22 March 2010 inclusive

Time: 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm

Venue: Epping Creative Centre, Dence Park, Epping

The course will be facilitated by Lesa Moore (BSc, MPhil), a Macquarie University astronomy graduate and specialist in public outreach, with the support of several leading members of the ASNSW.

The course will cover the following program:

  1. Orientation and terminology
  2. Earth, Sun, Moon
  3. The Solar System
  4. The Southern Sky
  5. Telescopes and Mounts
  6. Stellar Evolution
  7. The Electromagnetic Spectrum
  8. Galaxies, the Universe and Cosmology

The discounted members-only price for this first (pilot) course is $120 (inclusive of GST) - The regular price is $140 (inclusive of GST).

This includes:

  • attendance at lectures
  • weekly night sky viewing (weather permitting)
  • tea, coffee and biscuits
  • a certificate on completion of the course.

    There is no text book for the course, but it is highly recommended that participants purchase a copy of "Astronomy 2010", available from the ASNSW with your course registration, if you don't already have a copy.
