Topic:  Astronomical Surveys: The perspective of three lifetimes

Abstract: Professor Edge will give a summary of the progress made over the past century of astronomical surveys and what there is in store in the next 50. Constrasting our knowledge of the Universe over the lifetimes of his father, himself and his own children, the transformation of astronomy is explored from a more personal perspective.
Biography: Professor Alastair Edge started his astronomical career in Sydney as an AAO Summer Student in 1984. After a PhD in X-ray astronomy from the University of Leicester and research positions in Cambridge and Munich, he moved to Durham University in 1998 and has recently been promoted to a Chair of Astronomy.
His research interests relate to the clustering of galaxies and draw on observations over the full electromagentic spectrum.
