Women in Astronomy

Friday 11th October 2019 - 7:30pm
Topic: Women in Astronomy
Speaker: Lesa Moore, ASNSW
Venue: Epping Creative Centre - 26 Stanley Road, Epping
Abstract: When you think of famous astronomers, the names that come to mind are probably Galileo, Copernicus, Newton, maybe Eratosthenes. This talk will escape from the common theme by discussing the very important female astronomers who revolutionised stellar classification and distance measurement, made famous discoveries (including a new class of object), were at the forefront of radio astronomy, contributed to the understanding of dark matter in galaxies ... and more.
Biography: Lesa Moore has been an enthsiastic amateur astronomer since 1986 (the year of Halley's Comet). She has a long history of working in astronomical public outreach, including working at three public-access observatories at various times, including the Macquarie University Observatory, during her time studying for her Master of Philosophy in Astronomy (MPhil, 2008). Lesa was fortunate in spending five years as an enrichment lecturer on cruise ships. She led the Space Odyssey Team (SPOT) at Tara Anglican School for Girls over the winters of 2017 to 2019, and currently serves as treasurer and editor for the Astronomical Society of NSW (ASNSW).
