The ASNSW's Committee of Management

  • Committee members are elected each year at the Annual General Meeting.
  • The committee meets up to eleven times per year at the Epping Creative Centre (meetings usually held on a Wednesday night after new Moon), or mutually agreed location or by electronic means.
  • Together, committee members are responsible for the smooth running of the society and the maintenance and management of the society's assets for the benefit of all members. 
  • Any committee member may also take on any of the service roles (Librarian, Editor, Technical, Observations and Education Officers, etc.).
  • Making of Decisions: According to Clause 22 of the ASNSW Constitution, 
    • (1) Questions arising at a meeting of the committee or of any sub-committee appointed by the committee shall be determined by a majority of the votes of members of the committee or sub committee present at the meeting. 
    • (2) Each member present at a meeting of the committee or of any sub-committee appointed by the committee (including the person presiding at the meeting) is entitled to one vote but, in the event of an equality of votes on any question, the person presiding may exercise a second or casting vote.


President: Casual vacancy
The role is to provide leadership to the Committee and the Society. The President usually chairs Committee meetings and ordinary and annual general meetings of the Society. There is a requirement to be able to get the best out of meetings, as well as to have a clear vision of where the Society is going, and a capacity to communicate this to all members, especially Committee members. The President may also be a bank signatory.

There are two Vice-Presidents. One or other acts on behalf of the President at any meeting at which the President is absent. By ASNSW convention, each Vice-President has responsibility for managing either Crago Observatory or Wiruna and reporting to the Committee on the requirements of that location. The Vice President may also be a bank signatory.

Greg Neilson, SecretarySecretary: Greg Neilson
The Secretary is the usual first contact for the majority of interactions from outside the society, whether it be by email or snail mail. The Secretary handles all correspondence and processes new membership applications. He records and distributes agendas and minutes of committee meetings. The Secretary may also be a bank signatory.

Treasurer: Lesa Moore
The Treasurer records all incoming and outgoing financial transactions, handles banking and payments, prepares reports for monthly committee meetings and annual reports for the AGM. The Treasurer is a bank signatory.
Lesa also serves as Membership Officer. Membership records are held in the online database, but the Membership Officer is available to sort out glitches in the system and provide membership lists for general meetings and group moderators. Ordinary Committee Members
The committee may have up to five ordinary committee members whose role is to attend meetings, contribute to discussions and assist in the decision-making process. Ordinary committee members may also assist in a variety of ways (though this is not a requirement) that may include, but is not limited to:

  • serving on sub-committees;
  • taking on service roles;
  • becoming bank signatories;
  • handling hands-on maintenance and improvements at Wiruna and Bowen Mountain;
  • helping to organise and run our regular annual events (the South Pacific Star Party, the Christmas Party);
  • helping out at outreach activities (school nights and other organised astronomy open nights). 

Currently the ordinary committee members are: Chris Ross, Donna Burton, Don Whiteman and Trevor Gerdes. There is one casual vacancy for an ordinary committee member position (at at June 2018).
