Night-Vision for Enthusiasts
In anticipation of impacts to craniums and risks to night vision caused by bright meteors, the Society’s dedicated deep sky observers have secured a number of welder’s helmets (heavily re-enforced so that they resemble Ned Kelly’s Helmet) for wear day and night. For night time use, the dark window can be flipped up like the visor on the helmet of a medieval knight so as to allow brief bursts of observing between meteor impacts.
This will allow observers to continue throughout the night during the biggest and brightest meteor showers - even up to mag -20 Fireballs! Each helmet will bear the wearer’s name for easy identification, and will have padded interiors to allow for comfortable sleeping.
