Mystery Roadkill Near Wiruna

Early arrivals at Wiruna prior to the February New Moon weekend observing session discovered a mystery roadkill on the side of the Sofala Road, close to the turnoff leading to Lot 7.

Normally, roadkills are common in the district, and do not arise that much interest unless the death takes place inside your vehicle after the miserable beast has entered at a considerable rate of knots through your windscreen.

Members have become adept at identifying, at a glance, the nature of the deceased - i.e., Wombat, Kangaroo, Sheep, Yokel etc, but in this case, five successive carloads of members utterly failed at this task.

Discussion on-site resulted in a committee of the whole returning to the scene just before dark to make a more thorough investigation from the upwind side as the subject had clearly been dead for many days in exceedingly hot weather.

At the end, opinion remained divided.

One member suggested a Wombat / Kangaroo hybrid, several thought it might be the missing stud Alpaca which had strayed from the “Starpaws Observatory and Alpaca Farm” near Mudgee, while two members voted that it was a grey alien who had fallen from a VERY great height.

Alas, the mystery may forever remain unsolved, as club conservationist Col McMickle's sensible suggestion that an autopsy be performed in the eat-in kitchen was voted down and the next day the "thing" had vanished without trace.

However, the new crop circle which had appeared overnight in the field adjacent to the roadkill has resulted in more members opting for the grey alien scenario which continues to gain support.
