6. Toilet and Shower Cleaning

Back to volunteering index

  • Regular frequent cleaning of the toilets and showers makes the job easy.
  • Cleaning agents may contain bleach, so don’t splash it on your clothes.
  • Mild cleaning agents suitable for on-site septic systems are preferred.
  • All participants are perfectly capable of cleaning the amenities after each time they use them, but volunteers may like to do regular checks as well.

a) Toilets

  1. Put on disposable gloves.
  2. Squirt cleaner into the toilet bowl and clean the bowl with the toilet brush. Don’t flush!
  3. Use a disinfectant wipe to wipe the top of the cistern, toilet lid face, toilet seat and toilet rim.
  4. Put the used wipe in the bin.
  5. Use a fresh disinfectant wipe to wipe the light switch, door handle, shelf, taps and sink.
  6. Put the used wipe in the bin.
  7. If the bin is full, tie off the bag and replace the bin liner.
    • Black plastic bags are at the Check-In Desk or in the alcove of the Bunkhouse.
    • The full bag should be taken to the humpy in due course.
  8. If the toilet paper is low, refill.
  9. If the paper towels are low, refill.
  10. If soap is low, refill.
  11. Depending on weather conditions and the state of the floor, mop the cubicle floor, as needed, using the mop and roller bucket from the corridor. Mopping too often in dry weather can make the floor needlessly wet and slippery.
  12. Leave the water in the bucket.

b) Showers

  1. Put on disposable gloves.
  2. Squirt cleaner around the shower, mainly the floor, and wipe over with a sponge.
  3. Turn on the shower to rinse.
  4. Use a disinfectant wipe to wipe taps, soap dish and rim of the plastic shower floor.
  5. Use a fresh disinfectant wipe to wipe the light switch, door handle and bench.
  6. Mop the cubicle floor and mat as needed using the mop and roller bucket.
  7. Empty the bucket.
  8. Refill the bucket and add a few squirts of cleaner.  Leave it in the corridor.

A laminated copy of this procedure should be posted at the end of the Ladies’ Amenities Block.
