SGM and Ordinary Meeting

Date & Time
17 September 2021 7:30 PM - 10:00 PM
Timezone
(UTC+10:00) Australia/Sydney

The evening will begin with a Special General Meeting (SGM), where the members can show support for the nomination of Paul Hatchman for Life Membership (as proposed at the recent AGM). The SGM should only take about ten minutes. The SGM will be immediately followed by the talk by our guest speaker, as described below.

Speaker: Dr Doris Grosse, Research Fellow, College of Science, ANU

Title: Twinkle, twinkle little junk

Abstract: Since the first satellite launch, the space environment around Earth has been filling up with space debris. After a short introduction into the issue of space debris and the technology of adaptive optics, I will explain how adaptive optics technology can be one of many necessary solutions to help mitigate the accumulation of space debris.

Biography: Dr. Doris Grosse is an optical instrument scientist specialising in adaptive optics at the Australian National University. Her expertise in adaptive optics spans over a range of instrumentation for astronomical, space situational awareness and laser communications applications.
Dr Grosse was a graduate engineer in high-frequency engineering from the faculty of Electrical Engineering and Information Technology of the Ruhr-Universität Bochum in Bochum, Germany, where she also obtained her PhD in optics and photonics.
As a mission specialist for the ANU Institute for Space for Space Situational Awareness, she is a passionate advocate for the safety, security and sustainability of the space environment. To achieve this goal, she uses adaptive optics to characterise and identify space debris for space debris collision mitigation. Dr Grosse also serves on the Global Future Council of Space of the World Economic Forum.
