Ordinary Meeting
In honour of our founder, this meeting will be the Gordon Patston Memorial Lecture for 2021.
Speaker: Dr Noelia Martinez Rey, PhD Astrophysics, College of Science, ANU
Title: Overview of the Laser Guide Star Adaptive Optics activities at the ANU Advanced
Instrumentation and Technology Centre.
Abstract: The Advanced Instrumentation and Technology Centre (AITC), located at the Australian National University Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics in Canberra, gathers engineers and scientists from Australia and overseas working at the forefront of the astronomical and space instrumentation. During this talk, Dr Martinez will present an
overview of the AITC main activities with focus on the adaptive optics (AO) program. The AITC AO group develops systems for astronomy, space situational awareness, and laser communications applications. Dr Martinez will introduce current and future projects which will bring exciting opportunities for engagement with the community.
Biography: Dr Noelia Martinez is an academic postdoc at the Advanced Instrumentation and Technology Centre (AITC), at Mt Stromlo Observatory. Noelia completed her PhD in the Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias (Spain), developing an Adaptive Optics system for Free Space Optical Communications with satellites, focusing on the communication link between the ground and the space. She is now part of the Adaptive Optics group at the ANU Research School of Astrophysics and Astronomy (RSAA), working in AO systems for astronomy, laser communications, and space situational awareness using artificial guide stars. Noelia is also the co-chair of the RSAA Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access committee.
