Towards a Complete Census of Active Galactic Nuclei with Dr Li Shao CSIRO/ATNF

Friday 9th September 2016 - 8:00pm
Topic: Towards a Complete Census of Active Galactic Nuclei
Speaker: Dr Li Shao CSIRO/ATNF
Venue: Epping Creative Centre - 26 Stanley Road, Epping
Abstract: Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are well known for tens of years. Equipped with the most advanced telescopes, yet, astronomers are still struggling with building a complete sample of AGNs. Here I will briefly review the techniques used to search for AGNs and discuss the pros and cons of them. A complete census of AGNs is key to solving many questions in astrophysics.
Biography: I got my PhD in University of Munich in Germany. During my PhD, I was working in the Max Planck institute for extraterrestrial physics and the Max Planck institute for astrophysics. Both of them are in Garching (near Munich). I'm now a postdoc at the ATNF in Marsfield. I'm interested in black holes, active galaxies and star formation.
