Ordinary Meeting: "Ebbs, Flows and Standing in Moonshadows" followed by observing

Abstract: Tides and eclipses are phenomena that are governed by celestial mechanics. We notice the effects, but if you want to fully understand the causes, come along to this talk. I'll describe how tides work and show a short movie of the tide coming in at the Bay of Fundy, where the tidal range is some 17 metres between the low and the high. Transits and eclipses are hot topics this year. I'll show some images from the Ceduna total solar eclipse (2002) and some short clips from the Easter Island event (2010), as well as the recent transit of Venus. This talk will include safe observing tips for the total eclipse to occur later this year.

Observing: This talk will be followed by a brief observing session, weather permitting. Note that we have to vacate the ECC grounds by approximately 10.30pm.

Biography: Lesa Moore has been an amateur astronomer and member of the Astonomical Society of NSW since 1986. Her astronomical activities have included running courses in basic astronomy, conducting tuition in telescope use and working at three public-access observatories: Koolang Observatory (1992-2010), Macquarie University Observatory (2002-2010) and Sydney Observatory (since 2008). She made a gradual transition into professional astronomy through her studies at Macquarie University. She attained an honours degree in 2003, at which time she was working on data assessment for the Anglo-Australian Observatory's 6dF Galaxy Survey. She has since completed a Master of Philosophy in Astronomy, also with Macquarie University, under the supervision of Dr. Quentin Parker. This work on galaxies in Virgo led to a trip to Hawaii and a visit to the observatories at the summit of Mauna Kea in 2006. For five years, Lesa lectured in physics to nurses and environmental science students at Australian Catholic University, North Sydney. Currently, Lesa enjoys education and public outreach activities with Princess Cruises, Sydney Observatory and the ASNSW.
