Title: Eclipse Chasers in Australia: the past, present and future

Abstract: Experiencing a total solar eclipse is a visceral experience, involving anticipation, adventure and sometimes disappointment. This talk will focus on the Eclipse Chasers book written by Nick Lomb and Toner Stevenson with contributing authors Duane Hamacher, Uncle Ghillar Michael Anderson, Melissa Hulbert, Geoffrey Wyatt and Kirsten Banks. Published by CSIRO, the book is about uniquely Australian eclipses, beginning with First Nations experiences. The challenges, scientific ambitions and results of expeditions in 1857, 1871, 1908, 1910 and 1922 will be discussed as will the more recent eclipses in 1974, 2002 and 2012. The 2023 eclipse in Exmouth will conclude the talk with, what we hope will be, a successful result.

Biographies:

Melissa Hulbert is an astronomer with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in physics/astrophysics. Her career includes university lecturing and working at the Powerhouse Museum’s Sydney Observatory as programs coordinator and astronomy educator. She is an astrophotographer and has witnessed and photographed nine (and hopefully ten) total solar eclipses and one annular eclipse. Melissa has led three eclipse tours.

Toner Stevenson is an honorary History affiliate at The University of Sydney where she manages the School of Humanities. She has a Doctor of Social Sciences and her career in museums included Manager of Sydney Observatory. Toner is active in amateur astronomy and citizen science as past President, Sydney City Skywatchers (BAA NSW Branch) and member of the Royal Society of NSW, and she has experienced six (and hopefully seven) total solar eclipses.

Geoffrey Wyatt is a Senior Science Educator and astrophotographer. He has developed and presented highly engaging education science programs over the past 30 years for the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences at Sydney Observatory and the Powerhouse Museum. Geoffrey is twice winner of the prestigious David Malin Award for astrophotography. Geoff has witnessed a total solar eclipse and has plans for many more.
